Happy employees are productive employees. Productive employees lead to satisfied customers and increased profits. Here are seven suggestions to assist you in improving employee relations within your company.

1. Improve Communication.

Poor communication is a common cause of workplace issues. Both lack of communication and/or misunderstandings due to unclear communication can be a problem between employees and management, but it can be fixed. Open dialogue is key. Employees need to feel heard and be free to ask questions, offer input, and express grievances in a safe space without the fear of negative repercussions or being belittled.

2. Be Transparent.

Expectations should be consistent and transparent. People absorb information in different ways, so any changes should be communicated both verbally and non-verbally. Employees who feel they are dealing with management that is open and trustworthy are far more likely to engage freely with them, be less stressed as a result, and more satisfied with their work environment.

3. Ensure Employees Feel Valued.

Positive feedback is always preferable to negative. Employees need to hear they are doing a good job. Don’t assume they already know this. Tell them. Recognize the many valuable contributions they make instead of focusing on the few mistakes. Say thank you and publicly recognize significant achievements. This will motivate your high achiever even more and inspire co-workers to step up their game.

4. Provide Career Development.

Learning shouldn’t stop when we enter the workforce. Ensuring employees have plenty of professional development opportunities will invite the right people to your team and help keep them there.

5. Support Employees' Home Life

Employees have personal, sometimes complicated home lives. Having flexibility and being understanding helps employees feel supported and gives them a greater sense of loyalty and appreciation. Benefits are a great perk of any job, but letting your employees know you support a healthy work/life balance is equally appreciated.

6. Increase Your Visibility

Just because you have an office doesn’t mean you should hide out in there all the time. Make the effort to interact with employees on a casual basis regularly. This will make you appear more accessible and approachable, which will steer employees in the right direction when they are looking for help or guidance.

7. Provide Career Advancement.

The days of people slogging away at the same boring job for 45 years are over. Employees that know their chances of career advancement, recognition, and regular pay increases are coming are easier to capture and retain.
